Diana Whitney, a sixteen-year-old girl, was buried here in the valley of the Ohio after a westbound wagon train halted nearby on July 23, 1823, and then moved on, leaving her along the trail. She rests where the morning sun lights the river, and her death was remembered as a humble sacrifice woven into the country's greatness.
