On June 19, 1928 the Lehigh Portland Cement Company donated the area known as Hammer Mill Land to the state of Indiana for its natural beauty and scenic characteristics, to be used for preservation and as a state park. This donated area became a part of Spring Mill State Park, established in September 1927.
