Santa Fe locomotive 1880 was one of 87 Prairie type engines built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1906-1907. Built in Philadelphia in August 1907 at a cost of $24,500, it was used in freight service in Missouri, eastern and southern Kansas, and the Middle Divisions. These engines served for 46 years, a longer period than any other class of steam engines, before being completely replaced by diesel electric power in 1952. Locomotive 1880 was converted from coal to oil on September 11, 1941, ran 1,022,667 miles, went out of service on May 2, 1953, was donated to the City of Newton on November 18, 1955, placed in Military Park the same day, and dedicated to the city on August 21, 1956.
