The Golden Road is a 96-mile private road built by the Great Northern Paper Company from 1969 to 1972, stretching from the Canadian border crossing to Millinocket, Maine, alongside the West Branch of the Penobscot River. It was built to bring raw wood to the mill, ending log driving on the river and shifting transport to trucks. Today, logging companies still use the road to haul locally harvested wood.
