Ripon’s jail was constructed in 1925 for use by Constable John Garrison and the county sheriff. Stockton architect Ralph P. Morrell designed it, and Ripon contractor L. Ubels built it for $2,498.00. The jail was originally erected on a lot on North Walnut Street at the intersection of the railroad right of way. On December 3, 1957, it was raised off its foundation and relocated to its current location at First and Locust Street by C&L House Movers of Ceres for $950.00. The jail consists of two cells and a small office. Its interior and exterior needed rehabilitation to preserve its historical significance to the City of Ripon and the County of San Joaquin, and a restoration committee led by John Mangelos and Harrison Gibbs thanked local companies and individuals for helping preserve this piece of Ripon history.
