The first Catholic church and cemetery in Kern County were established at this site in Havilah in August 1866 as St. Joseph's by Father Francis Dade, the circuit priest headquartered in Visalia. When the gold ran out, the church in Havilah was moved to Bakersfield in 1873. Saint Francis Church was then built in Bakersfield in 1881 and remains a principal parish.
