Brookville Lake is a multipurpose flood control reservoir in the Whitewater River valley that also supports recreation with nine boat ramps, four marinas, two State Recreation Areas, campgrounds, beaches, picnic areas, playgrounds, hiking trails, and fishing access. The valley is among the most picturesque in the state but can be deadly during flooding, and since Brookville Dam became operational in January 1974 it has saved countless lives and property estimated in the millions by holding excess rainfall or snowmelt until stored water can be released safely. Developed and administered by the Louisville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with IDNR, the site includes a 5,260 acre lake, and Brookville Dam, at 181 feet high and 3,004 feet long, is the tallest dam in Indiana. Corps Park Rangers, state partners, and volunteers manage diverse natural resources to improve habitat for the abundant wildlife living in the park.
