Issaqueena Falls is a 100-foot cascade near Walhalla in northwestern South Carolina, in the Oconee District of Sumter National Forest. Long regarded as one of the area’s best-known natural landmarks, it is often visited along with nearby Stumphouse Tunnel. The falls are especially associated with the legend of Issaqueena, a Cherokee girl said to have leaped from the top with her lover while fleeing hostile tribesmen. Accounts differ over the lover’s identity and whether the couple died or survived on a hidden ledge. Its enduring importance lies in the combination of striking mountain scenery and powerful regional folklore.
