Big Spring, with an average daily flow of 35,000,000 gallons, provided water for the town founded on its banks. Michael Dickson of Tennessee was the first settler, about 1817. The town was laid out in 1819 and incorporated as Ococoposo, meaning Cold Water, in 1820. Its name was changed to Tuscumbia in 1822 for a Chickasaw Indian. Confederate and Union soldiers camped here intermittently during the wartime years of 1861~1865. The site hosted the Tennessee Valley Fair in the 1800's and later the Colbert County Fair until the 1930's. Spring park was established in 1919. President Carter opened his reelection campaign here on Sept. 1, 1980.
