During World War II, 243,000 volunteer seamen served in the United States Merchant Marine. More than 6,000 Merchant Marines made the supreme sacrifice, over 600 were held as Prisoners of War, and a total of 733 merchant ships were sunk. They delivered troops, fuel, tanks, medical supplies, and everything needed at the front line and beyond.
