Situated along a road originally cut by frontiersman Francis Farley during the late 18th century, Shady Spring was named for the nearby spring that served area residents and passersby with a continuous water source. Business activity in the area dates to 1832. During the Civil War, the turnpikes that met here proved crucial to campaigns into and around the Kanawha Valley.
