The Monterey Bay Aquarium stands on the site of the old Hovden Cannery, which in its heyday processed tons of sardines every day. By the 1960s the sardines had disappeared, and the cannery closed its doors in 1972. Now shimmering schools of silvery sardines, along with many other local animals, are alive and thriving there in world-renowned exhibits.
