Mount Baker is a ten thousand seven hundred eighty-one-foot active stratovolcano in Washington’s North Cascades, also known as Koma Kulshan or Kulshan. The youngest center in the Mount Baker volcanic field, its present glacier-clad cone is far younger than the area’s older volcanic activity and remains heavily covered with snow and ice, with glacier volume surpassed among Cascade volcanoes only by Mount Rainier. Its thermally active Sherman Crater underscores that it is still active. Long central to Indigenous peoples including the Nooksack and Upper Skagit, it later became a landmark for European explorers and settlers. Named by George Vancouver in 1792, it saw its first recorded ascent in 1868 and remains a major natural landmark.
