During World War II, Margaret and Frank Eckfield of Port Washington, Ohio, gave seven sons, one daughter, and one grandson to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America, leaving their once very active household extremely quiet after the last child went off to war. It is reported that Frank later wrote President Franklin D. Roosevelt, asking, "since you have all eight of my children do you want my dog, too?" Their family’s sacrifice included the ultimate sacrifice of Chief John Eckfield, who was lost at sea on October 19th, 1944, off the Philippine Islands in the Pacific. The family members who served were sons Clarence Eckfield in the U.S. Navy, Charles Eckfield in the U.S. Army, George Eckfield in the U.S. Army, John Eckfield in the U.S. Navy, Richard Eckfield in the U.S. Army, Robert Eckfield in the U.S. Army, Samuel Eckfield in the U.S. Army, daughter Ida Eckfield Berg in Civil Service, and grandson Gerald Eckfield in the U.S. Army.
