On July 25, 1863, Confederate troops under Gen. John H. Morgan passed here, burned a bridge of the Steubenville and Indiana R.R., and proceeded northward by way of Ekey Church, Dry Fork Valley, and Wintersville while being pursued by forces under Gen. James M. Shackelford, commanding the 14th Ill. Cav., First Ky. Cav., 9th Mich. Cav., 11th Mich. Bat'y, 86th Ohio Mounted Inf., and 2d Tenn. Mounted Inf.
