In 1859, the Tri-State Marker was set at the junction of the states of Minnesota, Iowa, and Dakota Territory by the Federal Land Office survey of Minnesota's western boundary. In the early 1900s, it was removed after partial destruction by vandals. In 1938, it was repaired and reset by adjacent counties at the original site under the direction of the US Department of Interior. In 1979, it was broken from its base by vehicle traffic. In 1980, it was restored and relocated at this site by the county governments and historical societies of Lyon County, IA, Rock County, Minn, and Minnehaha County, SD, while a flush marker was set at the original location at 43° 30' N.L. It was dedicated to the pioneers of Siouxland on October 26, 1980.
