Walter Perry Johnson, the original Humboldt Thunderbolt, was born here. The humble son of a Kansas farmer became one of baseball’s greatest all-time players, finishing with 417 career wins, 3,509 strikeouts, and several back-to-back pennants, and he was elected among the first five into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
