Chism Cooper Fugitt brought his family to Davis' Crossing on Dry Creek California in 1852, founded a new town called Fugitt, and became its first postmaster in 1859. The town was later renamed Liberty after Chism and Elizabeth's hometown in Missouri. Chism was a farmer and owned the Fugitt Hotel. When the railroad bypassed Liberty for Galt, the town was abandoned. In 1870 Chism moved to Galt and became the notary public and deputy assessor. He was watchman at the State Treasury in Sacramento when he fell ill and died with his three daughters by his side. His funeral cortege was the largest ever seen in Galt, and he was well liked and respected. Chism Fugitt was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Good Templars, and Order of the Chosen Friends.
