During the Civil War, the L&N Railroad trestle over Bacon Creek was destroyed twice by Confederate raider John Hunt Morgan. Its first destruction, in August 1861, was the first of many attacks Morgan made against the railroad to disrupt Union military traffic into the South. The second attack, the day after Christmas in 1862, brought Morgan's raiders into conflict with an outnumbered 2nd Michigan Cavalry under Capt. Frank W. Dickey, which made a fighting retreat to Munfordville. Col. Edward H. Hobson, commanding at Munfordville, sent additional troops to Bacon Creek in hopes of drawing Morgan into battle, but Morgan instead turned north toward other targets during his Christmas Raid.
