Missouri stocks rainbow trout and brown trout in suitable waters, adding about 2 million fish each year. Rainbow trout are native to mountain streams on the Pacific slope of North America, while brown trout are native to Europe. Trout do best in cold, highly oxygenated water, so four Missouri hatcheries are located near large coldwater springs, and Shepherd of the Hills receives cold water from the bottom of Table Rock Lake. Missouri’s rainbow trout population includes two genetic strains: the Missouri strain, which spawns in early fall and comes from fish brought from California’s McCloud River in 1880, and another strain that spawns from late winter to early spring. Brown trout are relatively wild and difficult to raise, and broodstock are collected each fall from Lake Taneycomo and spawned at Shepherd of the Hills Hatchery.
