In 1856, the John Rocca Saloon occupied John Pereira's original Jamestown Hotel on Main Street north of this site. That hotel was destroyed by fire in December 1896. In 1919, this building was constructed and became the Jamestown Hotel under owner David Martinez. It was known as the Spanish Hotel because many Spanish miners lived there. Local lore also holds that the building served as a mortuary and bordello. During the 1930's, Dr. Donald L. Farrell operated it as the Mother Lode hospital. In the 1950's, it was converted to a rooming house, and in the 1970's it was converted again into a hotel and restaurant. Today, the Jamestown Hotel is a town landmark owned and operated by Charlie Morgan.
