Fantasy Canyon in eastern Utah is a compact geological site, about 27 miles south of Vernal, where erosion has carved quartz-rich sandstones of the Uinta Formation into dense, fragile shapes often likened to coral, gargoyles, and stalagmites. Formed from sands, silts, and clays laid down along ancient Lake Uinta during the Eocene, the canyon preserves fossils, magnetite, and gilsonite dikes that reflect its ancient environment. Weathering continues to destroy old formations and expose new ones, as seen when the famous teapot formation collapsed in 2006. Though only about 10 acres, it is prized for vividly displaying erosion, deep geologic time, and unusual desert scenery.
