Acoma, known in legend as a "place that always was," has been occupied since at least the 13th century according to archaeological evidence. Established on this mesa for defensive purposes, it was settled by inhabitants of nearby pueblos that had been abandoned. Nearly destroyed by the Spanish in 1599, Acoma was quickly reestablished by the ancestors of its present occupants.
