Inside the Kiln
Industry
At Fountain Rock, after limestone was heated in the kiln and had cooled, a workman stood at a large metal grate, the only such grate remaining there, and pulled a lever to dump the resultant quicklime into a one-horse cart backed into the kiln. The quicklime was then transported to the grinder/slaker shed for further processing. The work was hard, and the workman was sometimes covered from head to toe with white powdered lime as he worked, often wearing a handkerchief over his nose and mouth to avoid breathing the lime powder.
