Ochoco National Forest spans about 850,000 acres in the Ochoco Mountains of central Oregon near Prineville, ranging from dense pine forest to high desert shaped by rimrock, canyons, unusual geologic formations, and the headwaters of the North Fork Crooked River. A 1993 Forest Service study estimated about 95,000 acres of old growth, and three wilderness areas—Mill Creek, Bridge Creek, and Black Canyon—protect 36,200 acres of more remote land. Managed through ranger districts in Prineville and Madras, the forest also administers the Crooked River National Grassland and supports notable wildlife, seasonal winter range closures, and a wide range of outdoor recreation.
