An Indian and wagon trail, now Shades Crest Road, led to popular chalybeate springs. The summit, now Bluff Park, became a resort known for its view, cool air, and healing mineral water. In 1899 a school and church was built. In 1909 the Bluff Park Hotel, built on land settled by the Hale family, was later lost to fire in 1925. In 1996 the district was recognized by the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
