On October 16, 1805, William Clark recorded in his journal that after getting safely over the rapid and having taken dinner, he set out and proceeded seven miles to the junction of the Snake River and the Columbia, with the Columbia joining from the northwest. The Snake River flows into the Columbia about one mile to the southwest.
