Burke’s Garden, eight miles east, was discovered by James Burke in 1749. Major Lewis’s expedition against the Indians camped there in 1756, and Burke’s fort stood there in 1774. In 1781 Indians raided into Burke’s Garden and carried off the wife and children of Thomas Ingles.
