Hopewell Baptist Church was organized in 1874 by 35 charter members. The congregation’s first building stood about one mile south at Hopewell Cemetery. In 1887, the church moved to this site near the landmark hill called Lone Mound. Members built a new sanctuary in 1899. At first, circuit riding preachers served the church, and worship was held one Sunday each month; by 1950, the congregation met weekly. Its focus has included missions and youth activities. Located near the Lone Mound School, Hopewell Baptist Church became a focal point for the community, and the sanctuary long served as a gathering place for residents. Today, Hopewell Baptist Church continues as a spiritual leader in Wise County.
