From May 12, 1927 until about 1944, Alfred Kneebone operated a gas station and store that supplied families staying in the rental cabins of Kneebone's Bridgeport Pleasure Resort along the South Yuba River. The resort featured a swimming beach, dining hall, and dance pavilion, and the store kept soft drinks, beer, fruit, milk, eggs, meat, vegetables, ice cream, candy, and household goods in stock. Alfred's daughter Alfrieda recalled riding in the back of the family's 1½ ton Chevrolet truck to Marysville to purchase food and ice. The gas station building also included a garage used for storage, a gold smelter, and a cold storage room where ice kept produce, milk, and meat fresh. Later, a Kohler generator was installed in the generator/separator building next to the Visitor Center, providing electricity to operate a refrigeration system in the cold room, while gas, oil, and automotive supplies were kept on hand for needy motorists.
