The Delaware and Lehigh National and State Heritage Corridor is a more than 150-mile region across five Pennsylvania counties where canals and railroads from Northeastern Pennsylvania’s prosperous coal age link people, places, and events that helped shape the nation. Its history trails and landscapes connect the stories of lumberjacks, coal miners, lock tenders, canalers, and railroaders with canal paths, bike trails, and the waters of the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers. In its northern reach, Luzerne County’s coal towns and diverse cities reflect immigrant hardship, ethnic diversity, and hopes for prosperity, while Carbon County offers scenery and reminders of the coal and lumber industries, along with towns, a coal museum, and an underground mine. The Lehigh Valley combines rolling hills, winding rivers, farms, covered bridges, and Victorian townhouses with Moravian heritage, the steel and cement industries, and notable festivals. Farther south, Bucks County along the Delaware River Scenic Drive joins pastoral vistas, Colonial farmsteads, a renowned artist’s community, and places tied to America’s battle for independence, including the Christmas Day, 1776 turning point along the Delaware River. Across the corridor, trails along the Susquehanna, Lehigh, and Delaware Rivers, industrial landmarks, and protected vistas bring together outdoor recreation and a distinctive American landscape shaped by coal, industry, immigration, and preservation.
