Lander Peak is a 10,463-foot mountain in western Wyoming near the Idaho border, remembered especially for its place in American art. It became associated with Albert Bierstadt’s monumental painting The Rocky Mountains, Lander’s Peak after Bierstadt traveled west in 1859 with Frederick W. Lander on an expedition. When Lander died during the Civil War in 1862, Bierstadt named the mountain for him. He completed the 6-by-10-foot canvas in 1863, and its sale in 1865 for $25,000 helped establish the mountain’s image in the public imagination.
