Established in 1819, Demopolis Town Square is one of Alabama's oldest public squares and has long stood at the civic heart of Demopolis, whose beginnings were tied to the 1817 Vine and Olive Colony. Occupying a full city block, it features a Victorian-era gazebo and an 1895 cast-iron fountain, while notable surrounding buildings include Demopolis City Hall, built in 1869–70, and the 1843 Presbyterian Church later known as Rooster Hall. That former church also served as the Marengo County Courthouse from 1868 to 1871. Renamed Confederate Park in 1923, the square remains a major community gathering place and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 29 November 1975.
