At 3005 West Carroll Avenue in Chicago, the E-Z Polish Factory occupies a unique place in Frank Lloyd Wright’s career as the only factory he designed. Built in 1905 for a company that made shoe and stove polish, it connected Wright to a practical manufacturing business rather than the houses and civic buildings for which he is better known. Its concrete construction and stark, minimally decorative design make it notable within his work. Commissioned by William E. Martin and Darwin D. Martin, the building was later effectively forgotten as a Wright design until architectural historian Grant Carpenter Manson rediscovered it in 1939. It now serves as practice space for local bands and artists.
