The University of Idaho Arboretum and Botanical Garden is a 63-acre public collection on the Moscow campus that unites the university’s early forestry history with a growing botanical landscape. Its roots lie in 1910, when Dr. Charles Houston Shattuck created the campus’s first arboretum by planting a 14-acre slope with introduced trees and shrubs, a grove later named Shattuck Arboretum that still preserves mature specimens. The newer arboretum, begun in 1982 on former hayfield land, is organized by world plant regions and includes display beds and a xeriscape garden. It has expanded into a major northwestern collection and also serves as a campus gathering place.
