Kamiak Butte is a quartzite summit in eastern Washington that rises sharply above the Palouse farmland near Palouse and Pullman. Named for Chief Kamiakin of the Yakama tribe, it preserves ancient reddish Precambrian quartzite that once formed part of a sea bed and later stood above the lava flows that covered much of the region. Together with nearby Steptoe Butte, it is an outlier of Idaho's Coeur d'Alene Mountains and part of a National Natural Landmark designated in 1965. Its county park protects important habitat for native plants, birds, and mammals, while trails, camping, and seasonal programs make it a valued recreation area.
