Hogback Covered Bridge near Winterset, Iowa, spans the North River on a bypassed section of Douglas Township Road and takes its name from a nearby limestone ridge. Built in 1884 by Harvey P. Jones and George K. Foster, its 106-foot Town lattice truss features a dense pattern of diagonal members, with the main span supported by steel pylons. Once one of 19 covered bridges in Madison County, it is now one of six survivors. Its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 recognized its engineering and historic importance, and a 1992 rehabilitation helped preserve it as a notable 19th-century Iowa bridge.
