Perry County Jail in Pinckneyville, Illinois, was built in 1871 as the county’s second jail after state laws in 1865 and 1867 let the county raise funds through taxes and bonds. It replaced a small brick jail erected in 1833–34. Cincinnati architect Samuel Hannaford designed the new building, and E. Hough of Indianapolis built it for $14,150, with the sheriff’s residence attached so prisoners could be watched constantly. The jail remained in use until 1987, then held county offices before becoming a museum in 1993. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 10, 2000.
