Constructed in 1883 by pharmacist Paul Alexander Breymann, this stone and brick commercial building became a long-running pharmacy and drug store on Schulenburg’s Main Street. Breymann had immigrated from Germany to the United States in 1872, worked for pharmaceutical companies in Baltimore and Houston, moved to Schulenburg, and opened his own business; he married Anna Carlson in 1876. In 1893, when a massive fire destroyed many predominantly wooden buildings along Main Street, the fire brigade fought the blaze with a modern hand pump, but this building halted the flames from spreading to the eastern portion of downtown, and its stone still bears char marks. After Breymann’s death in 1898, the business passed to his son, also named Paul Alexander Breymann, and the establishment also served as the School Book Depository and a place to buy cut glass, china, and jewelry. After the younger Paul Alexander Breymann died in 1935, the third generation of the family, Paul Anthony, operated the pharmacy until his death in 1949. His widow, Rena Heiss Breymann, ran it for the next ten years before selling the building in 1959 to Justin V. Bartos, ending 86 years of operation as a pharmacy and drug store. The building has remained a historic presence in Schulenburg’s town center for nearly 150 years.
