The Wonderland Trail is a ninety-three-mile loop around Mount Rainier in Mount Rainier National Park, built in 1915 and later designated a National Recreation Trail in 1981. Crossing about twenty-two thousand feet of cumulative elevation gain, it is a strenuous backcountry route that reveals the mountain from many angles while passing through lowland forest, subalpine meadows, and landscapes shaped by twenty-five named glaciers. Hikers cross many rivers, and storms can seriously disrupt the route, as happened after severe flooding in 2006 before it reopened in 2007. Permitted camping, historic Civilian Conservation Corps shelters, and limited through-hiking completions underscore both its popularity and difficulty.
