Oglala National Grassland is a protected shortgrass prairie in northwestern Nebraska along the South Dakota and Wyoming borders, managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Its open plains, badlands, and the striking formations of Toadstool Geologic Park make it one of Nebraska’s most distinctive landscapes, and it is the state’s only region of Pierre Shale, with older volcanic ash deposits also preserved there. The semi-arid grassland supports diverse wildlife, including native bison range, many birds and mammals, and several sensitive species. It also contains important archaeological and historic sites, from the Hudson-Meng Bison Kill to Warbonnet Creek, alongside New Deal-era ponds and reservoirs.
