Yawgoo Valley in Exeter, south of Providence, is Rhode Island’s only surviving ski resort. It opened for the 1965–66 season as the state’s first chairlift-served ski area, gaining an early edge over local hills that still used T-bars. As Rhode Island’s other four ski areas later closed, Yawgoo endured by continually updating its equipment, especially snowmaking, which is crucial at one of New England’s southernmost ski areas. The mountain has 14 trails served by two chairlifts, generally easier terrain, a snow-tubing park with eight lanes and two lifts, and a summer water park, helping preserve skiing in the state year-round.
