The first deeded property here went to William Salter in 1752, and early settlers called the area Piney Point for a wooded point that jutted into Core Sound and served as a navigational day mark. After a post office was established in 1888, the community became known as Stacy. It became known as the decoy carving capital of Core Sound because many fine carvers lived here, most notably Mitchell Fulcher (1869-1950), whose decoys later brought five-figure prices at auction. Other livelihoods included commercial fishing, boat building, fish houses, storekeeping, hunting guides, and service in the Coast Guard. Long-hauling originated in the Stacy community of Core Sound, where crews met at the community store on weekends to draw straws for hauling locations, then pulled a 1,000-yard net 6 feet deep between two boats for up to five miles before concentrating the fish; by this method, the annual catch increased from less than one-half million pounds to 5 million pounds between 1910 and 1930. Stacy was also known for its softshell crab industry, with daily shipments to Maryland and New York in the early 1900s, including more than 35,000 dozen soft shells shipped in 1926. Education was important in the community: the first school stood at the site of the present-day Volunteer Fire Department, Beulah Hamilton, a Stacy native, taught at the second school after graduating from Atlantic High School and becoming a North Carolina certified teacher, some children attended Saint Paul’s boarding school in Beaufort for high school and then went on to college, and Stacy natives included UNC-Chapel Hill graduates Edgar and Horace Fulcher, medical doctors Theodore Salter and Luther Fulcher, and Carteret County’s first female pharmacist, Evelyn Slater Sewell.
