In what was originally known as the East San Jose barrio of “Sal Si Puedes,” or “Get Out If You Can,” Cesar and Helen Chavez and their family lived at this site from 1951 to 1953 as Cesar began his work in the Civil Rights Movement, and the property remains owned by Libario Chavez, Cesar’s youngest brother.
