Boxerwood Gardens is a 15-acre arboretum near Lexington in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley that grew from a private landscape begun in 1952 into a public garden, nature center, and outdoor education space. Within a larger preserve on Ross Road, it blends cultivated collections with a woodland setting and features thousands of labeled trees and shrubs, including about 1,300 cultivars. Its strongest collections include dwarf conifers, magnolias, dogwoods, rhododendrons, azaleas, and Japanese maples, notably 163 varieties of Acer palmatum. Family-oriented features such as the PlayTrail, Fairy Forest, wetland walk, and pollinator garden complement its horticultural significance, recognized by National Register listing in 2015.
