Johnny Cash often returned to Rison with his siblings and father, Ray Cash, for annual family reunions at the old American Legion Hut across from the courthouse on Sycamore Street. At the 1970 reunion, he gathered his family around him and said he was proud of his heritage and his people and glad to be with them for that short time, and together they sang the old family favorite “The Uncloudy Day.” Earlier that year he had performed the song on the “Johnny Cash Show” with his mother, Carrie Cash, and he said it was the first song he ever sang in public, at age 12, in Dyess Baptist Church. His grandfather, Rev. William Henry Cash, and great-grandfather, Rev. John Hubbard Woodson Overton, were well-known Baptist circuit riders who served many churches in the region. In 1872 they helped organize the Friendship Baptist Association, which had grown to 35 churches in five counties by 1900. Johnny Cash sometimes used the alias “William Overton,” a name formed from their names, and he was himself an ordained minister who appeared around the world with the Rev. Billy Graham on his Crusades.
