After crossing the Etowah on May 23, Geary's 2d Division, 20th A.C. [US], drove Ross' cavalry [CS] beyond Raccoon Creek on May 24, 1864. This covered the march of the rest of the corps south to Burnt Hickory P.O., where Geary's troops joined them after being relieved there at noon by Schofield's 23d A.C. [US]. Schofield then moved east on the Alabama road, en route to Sligh's Mill, as these troops formed the left of Sherman's [US] flanking march around the Allatoona Mountains. The 20th A.C. route to Hickory was the road just west of Raccoon Creek.
