Piper Mountain Wilderness is a federally protected wilderness in the White Mountains of eastern California, northeast of Big Pine, spanning 72,575 acres between Owens and Eureka valleys north of Death Valley National Park. Set aside by the 1994 California Desert Protection Act, it is divided into three units by vehicle corridors and includes steep mountains, narrow canyons, alluvial fans, and floodplains across a broad elevation range. Its varied plant life includes rare species and one of the northernmost stands of Joshua trees, while three areas support desert bighorn sheep. Light use, scarce water, and lingering former roads help define its exceptional solitude.
