On June 8, 1967, the crew of the USS Liberty, AGTR 5, received recognition for courageous and faithful service in military action. Their awards included the Congressional Medal of Honor, 2 Navy Crosses, 38 Silver-Bronze Stars, and 208 Purple Hearts. The action resulted in 34 killed in action and 174 wounded in action, and it brought the most decorations for a single ship action in U.S. history. In July 1967, Vice Adm. William I. Martin, commander of the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea, declared that the USS Liberty had become a legend in its own time.
