On May 23, 1864, the Army of the Tennessee [US], consisting of Logan’s 15th and Dodge’s 16th A.C., crossed the Etowah River at Woolley's Bridge and by Old Macedonia Church and roads not now existing reached this intersection with the Old Alabama Road, 7.5 miles west of Stilesboro. Keeping west of Euharlee Creek, the troops continued southwest to a creek crossing at present-day Aragon, in Polk County. These troops, the right wing of Sherman’s army [US], were moving to Dallas, in Paulding County, to outflank Johnston’s army [CS] at Allatoona.
